How much does it cost to run a game console?

Short answer: A game console drawing 200 watts costs about $0.04 per hour at the U.S. average residential price of 18.31¢ per kWh. Used 3 hours a day, 30 days a month, that is about $3.30 per month and $39.55 per year. In Louisiana, the cheapest state, the same use costs $2.29 a month; in Hawaii, the most expensive, $8.64.

A current high-end game console draws around 200 watts during demanding games, far less than a gaming PC. Three hours a day costs a few dollars a month. The setting that matters most is what the console does when you are not playing.

Playing, streaming and standby

Power varies widely with what the console is doing. A demanding game can pull 200 watts; a menu or a video streaming app, 50 to 70. Smaller handheld-style consoles use 10 to 20 watts even when docked to a television.

Standby is the hidden part. In an energy-saving mode a console uses under a watt. In an "instant-on" or "rest" mode with network features and downloads enabled, it can use 10 watts or more around the clock, which is over 80 kWh a year.

Console or streaming device for video

Watching video through a console uses several times the power of a streaming stick or the television's own apps, which need only a few watts. If the console is mainly used for films and series, a dedicated streaming device pays for itself.

The math behind the numbers

200 watts ÷ 1,000 = 0.2 kW. 0.2 kW × 3 hours = 0.6 kWh per day. 0.6 kWh × $0.1831 = $0.11 per day. Over 30 days that is 18.0 kWh and $3.30 a month.

Your own figure will differ if your appliance has a different wattage, if you use it more or less, or if your price per kWh is not the national average. Change any of those in the calculator at the top of this page. Our step-by-step guide explains where to find each number.
